ACVSA board-certified small animal surgeon is a veterinarian with advanced training and expertise in complex surgical procedures for dogs and cats. After completing veterinary school, these specialists undergo several additional years of intensive training, including at least one year of internship, a three-year surgical residency, publication of original veterinary research in a peer-reviewed journal, and passing a rigorous board examination. Only then can they become board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).

Board-certified surgeons are highly skilled in both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, using specialized techniques and equipment to provide the highest level of surgical care. They often work in collaboration with the primary veterinarian to ensure safe and effective treatment, as well as the best possible outcome for their patients.
