In certain cases, your veterinarian may recommend a bone marrow evaluation to gain deeper insight into how your pet’s body is producing blood cells. This diagnostic procedure can be especially helpful when investigating conditions such as pancytopenia (a decrease in all major blood cell types) or severe non-regenerative anemia.

At WTVS, our internal medicine specialist can perform bone marrow sampling safely and effectively at your veterinarian’s hospital. The sample is usually collected from the shoulder region, but a pelvic site may be used if needed. The risk of bleeding is very low. Both local anesthetic and heavy sedation are used to ensure your pet’s comfort throughout the process.

Bone marrow evaluation provides essential information about blood cell production and can be a key step in diagnosing complex medical conditions—allowing your veterinarian to create the most informed and effective treatment plan possible
