At WTVS, we perform urethrocystoscopy, a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that allows us to directly visualize the urinary tract—from the urethra to the bladder—in dogs and cats. The reproductive tract can also be evaluated in females. This advanced diagnostic tool helps identify the cause of urinary issues such as straining, blood in the urine, incontinence, or recurring urinary tract infections.
What to Expect:
Urethrocystoscopy is performed under general anesthesia to ensure your pet remains completely still and comfortable. Using a small, specialized camera called an endoscope, our team carefully examines the urethra and bladder lining in real time. This allows us to identify abnormalities such as inflammation, stones, tumors, or structural issues that may not be visible on standard imaging like x-ray or ultrasound. When needed, small instruments can be passed through the scope to collect biopsy samples or remove small stones or debris.
Why It’s Important:
This procedure provides a clear, detailed look inside your pet’s urinary tract, helping us reach an accurate diagnosis and create a targeted treatment plan. It can also be used to monitor healing or response to therapy in pets with ongoing urinary conditions.
Referral Procedure:
Because urethrocystoscopy requires specialized equipment and advanced training, it is typically performed by an internal medicine specialist. Most general practice veterinarians refer pets to our team for this procedure when a more detailed evaluation of the urinary tract is needed.
After the Procedure:
Most pets recover quickly from anesthesia and can return home the same day. Mild temporary discomfort or increased urination may occur for a short period afterward. We’ll review the findings and discuss next steps with your veterinarian once the procedure is complete.
