Pericardiocentesis is a procedure used to remove fluid from the sac surrounding the heart (the pericardium). When excessive fluid builds up in this space, it can prevent the heart from beating effectively and may cause life-threatening symptoms such as weakness, collapse, or difficulty breathing.
At WTVS, pericardiocentesis is performed by a board-certified veterinary internal medicine specialist using real-time ultrasound guidance to ensure precision and safety. During the procedure, a small needle is carefully inserted through the chest wall into the pericardial space to withdraw the fluid. This helps relieve pressure on the heart and allows it to beat more strongly again.
The collected fluid is then analyzed to help determine the underlying cause of the buildup, such as bleeding, infection, or cancer. Most patients experience immediate improvement after the procedure.
Because of the delicate nature of this procedure and the potential risks involved, pericardiocentesis is typically performed by a veterinary specialist or, in emergency situations, by an experienced emergency or critical care veterinarian. At WTVS, we are proud to bring this advanced, life-saving service directly to your veterinarian’s hospital, ensuring your pet receives expert care in a familiar and supportive environment.
